This is Gauge and that is a duck feather hanging from his mouth! He didn’t hurt the duck but he surely enjoyed the feathers strewed about, left behind when something else, probably a coyote, got the duck. We took the photo because it looked so cute!
A magnificent looking dog Gauge is a hunting dog – and in the right hands he suspect he could be the pride and joy of his owner. Unfortunately he does not discriminate between small game and cats. He will try to pick up a cat to carry around as if there is no difference between the living pet cat and the dead possum.
Gauge is a Deutsch-Drahthaar. We did not know what this was either, before Gauge. And Gauge is proof that you truly can find what ever you want at your local animal shelter. There is no sacred breed immune to this story. You can learn more about Gauge by clicking here.
Gauge is an intelligent dog who does listen to verbal commands, but he is also really strong. Walking him is fine, until he sees something scurry by, and living surrounded by hundreds of acres of woods, well, there are lots of things that scurry about. So, we started trying some different collars and harnesses and lo and behold, we discovered that a no pull works!
I was so excited to see how well it worked that I went and got my camera and took some videos. I had not used the video function before so some of the videos were, well, interesting but of no value here! I did however get two videos showing how well Gauge does on that harness.
Gauge has had some training, you can see in the one video where he does a heel sit: he is turning so he sits at the correct side – almost.
Whoever adopts Gauge will need to work with him on agility. All his ancestors have top agility scores and it’s a darn shame that Gauge does not!
