Madison

20 July 2010 No Comment

Madison is such an interesting little dog!  She came into our home with Precious but just a few days later Precious was adopted and we were very concerned about Madison losing her best friend and being so new to our home….  She spent a lot of time that first night just running around the house like she was looking for something but since then she has seemed to be okay.  This is a picture of Madison and Precious shortly before Precious was adopted.

Madison is VERY good in the house.  She is the most housebroken chihuahua I have ever seen and she is like a camel in that she can “hold it” forever.  When she needs to go out she goes straight out and “does her business” and doesn’t appear to be bothered by rain.  We leave her loose in the house during the work day and have had no issues.  She has never had an accident in the house, doesn’t chew, gets along great with our dog and has largely ignored the cats.

Madison is still a little skittish and will duck and run away if you try to pet her and are moving too quickly.  She much prefers to come to you when you are sitting quietly.  She loves having her stomach rubbed and will quickly roll over when you start to pet her.  Madison would likely not do well in a very active home or one with small children.  She seems most content curled up on the couch next to us when we are relaxed and watching tv though she doesn’t mind being underfoot in the kitchen during meals!  She does appear to enjoy being our with dog and based on her relationship with Precious would likely do best in a home with another small dog.

Madison is responsive to redirection, has not been barky (and stops barking when asked) and has not been food aggressive.  She has not shown much interest in toys and will go in her crate without issue though rarely uses it of her own volition.  She LOVES to sleep in bed with us and no matter whether she is in our bed, her crate or the couch – she is almost always curled up underneath a blanket.  Madison loves to go on walks and was an angel while having her toenails clipped.

Madison has some very distinct physical characteristics!  She is missing some teeth which gives her a funny little lip curl and exposes one of her teeth.  She also has a birth defect- her front left paw is slightly deformed.   This doesn’t seem to bother her though occasionally she will favor it while sitting and when out walking she sometimes holds it up and just uses her other three legs to go quickly.

Dogs at our house often go through a series of names as we get to know them but make no mistake that this girl knows her name is Madison and she responds when you call.  However, we still occasionally call her Smeagol as when the girls arrived my husband and son through it was simply fabulous to have “My Precious” and Smeagol – particularly with Madison’s rather distinct physical appearance.  We also occasionally call her Mrs. Burns as we find her face at times strangely reminiscent of Mr. Burns from the Simpsons.

Madison is truly a delightful little dog and could make a wonderful addition for the right family.  This is her second time around after her previous owners we no longer able to care for her and she has lost her companion – this girl is ready for her forever home!
