Indiana and her Seven Puppies

Indiana is a lucky gal!
Left behind to starve to death, literally, she was saved by local animal control agency employees.  A couple more days was all she had left.  It’s hard to wrap my thoughts around someone capable of leaving a dog behind to die a slow death.

Add to that seven puppies!

Indiana, as our vet noted, gave it all up for the puppies. They are rotund and robust and full of life.  Even though she had no food she fed her puppies.
At the vet appointment, Indiana weighed in at a meager 44 pounds!  Half of what she should weigh.  Every bone protrudes.  indana_and_pups_dec_24_2009

And yet, she is the happiest dog in Indiana.  She greeted Animal control employees with wagging tail, she greeted PetsConnect volunteers with wagging tail.  And when I got her home, she greeted my dogs, other foster dogs and the foster cats with  — you got it – Wagging Tail!  Simply put, there is only one way for her to be and that would be happy!  Suffice it to say, Indiana get’s along with everything!

These photos were taken Christmas Eve.  Here she is with her puppies.  And look, she is smiling!
Indiana appears to be a Flat Coated Retriever mix.  She is all black with long Golden type hair.  Maybe she is a Golden Retriever mix?  We are not sure.

indana_feeding_pups3_dec_24_2009 Indiana, or Indy for short,  eats all the time now.   She is on puppy food, Iams.   She snags food out of other dog food dishes to and from the dog yard.  It’s funny to watch her.  It’s like she is grabbing a cookie out of the cookie jar and her tail is wagging the entire time.

She loves to snuggle.  Here she is laying up against Dennis while her puppies nurse… her puppies would nurse all the time if we let them!

Her puppies are in a puppy pen attached to a large crate.  They are in the process of being weaned – vet orders.  The puppies are not taking it too well, but Indy is on an antibiotic for her cold.  She came with a mild Upper Respiratory Infection.  Because of her poor weight we want to stay on top of this infection.  The puppies watch mom walk by their puppy pen and they all line up by the pen and HOWL for mom!  Ok, not mom, for the promise of milk.

The pups: Seven total, five boys and two girls.  Most are a dark brown or black and then there is this one tan indana_tan_pup2_dec_24_2009one.   The tan one is a male.  Estimated birth date is November 26th, 2009.  It seems someone gave them a lot of attention as they are well socialized already.  Or maybe they just have mom’s happy temperament.  Thus far the puppies appear to be healthy but it is still very early to tell.  They have been named, well, names have been picked out but we don’t know who will be who yet.  Here are the names: Jennifer, Juniper, Bert Blues, Skip-a-long Sam, Maudalin Man, Tinker and Donavan.  Perhaps you can figure out where the names came from?

Making a Difference

PetsConnect! is an all volunteer not-for-profit organization moving into out Tenth Year!
All the animals are in foster homes and well cared for, we pay our bills, make our thank yous and our volunteers work very hard to run PetsConnect! as a professional, caring, friendly business!
The animals in our program come from local animal shelters and to the employees and volunteers of our local animal shelters we are most grateful and thankful for the hard, emotionally taxing work they engage in daily.
