Celeste is a sweet four month old puppy.
Like any puppy she enjoys rawhides and toys that squeak. She also likes to tear up newspapers, chew shoes and pull on our shirt tails or pant legs.
Like puppies her age, she thrives on attention, especially attention with the mission of training her new skills. And she has lots of skills to learn!
Celeste needs to learn to navigate through her environment using limited vision and impaired hearing.
Why does she have these impairments? We really don’t know. She came to us from a local animal shelter in this condition. Our vet suspects she suffered from a serious eye infection prior to landing in the shelter. We don’t know. What we do know is she is a special needs puppy meaning she has some physical handicaps to overcome.
Celeste can see off to the side, but not so much in front of her. Thus she walks looking to the side to see where she is. She bumps into things sometimes, including our legs. But wow, is she so excited when she ‘finds’ us!
Light helps Celeste to see better.
Celeste comes when ‘called’. Called is defined as us clapping our hands! She will hear the clapping, hold her head to the side and then joyfully work her way to the sound. It’s like a game for her and when she finds us she has won the grand prize and is all excited.
This is one of the most joyful puppies we have every had. She is sweet, affectionate and gentle. She likes to be close by us and will lay quietlly at our feet. Celeste is also crate trained and almost housetrained.
Celeste has a deep bark but does not bark much. She is a quiet pup. Once she learns her surroundings she navigates around them very well. She is a quick learner and adapts well to new situations. She does well on a leash too.
Celeste has funny front legs. We do know know if this is from a Bassett mix or a birth defect. a toe on one of her front feet is deformed but it is not noticeable and does not bother her.
So, if you are looking for a sweet, loving companion who has much to offer; if you have patience and can think outside the box in training a special needs dog; and if you are someone who just loves a dog like Celeste, well, she may be the one for you.
